How Sensitive Is Your Skin?

Would you consider your skin to be sensitive? What does having sensitive skin mean?

There is a difference between having a sensitive skin condition and having sensitized skin. Sensitive skin conditions often show up in the form of Rosacea, perpetual pinkness, and skin that irritates and reacts to inside and outside forces easily and usually. Sensitive skin conditions are often found in (but certainly not limited to) skin that is English, Scottish, Irish, fair skinned.

Sensitized skin is a skin that has moments of sensitivity and can usually be corrected with a good assessment.

Some causes of sensitized skin are preventable:

  • Harsh cleansers
  • Mixing serums with other serums that you don’t know ingredients
  • Letting hot water beat on your face in the shower rather than using lukewarm water
  • Not washing your face at the end of your day
  • Picking and prodding
  • Using crappy makeup
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Too much sugar in your daily intake
  • Sun exposure without protection.
  • Not exercising enough
  • Negative thinking
  • Not using enough moisturizer or the right one

There are other factors too that are harder to control:

  • Pregnancy
  • PMS
  • Peri menopause, menopause, post menopause
  • Grief and sadness
  • Anger and resentment
  • Hormones
  • Prescription drugs

Sensitized skin is often correctable or at least manageable because there are often things you can do to help yourself.

Tips to Help with Sensitized Skin

First, back off on your entire skin care routine. Simply cleanse and moisturize for a week- nothing else. This will help eliminate the possibilities that the products are the culprit.

Try to replace any liquid you consume during the day with water instead.

Go outside for a walk even if it is just in your yard, in the driveway, to the mailbox, to the corner if you are not someone who moves regularly. Move. This wakes up your insides and gets fresh blood moving and clearing.

Notice how your skin feels when you wake up, throughout the day, is it tight, itchy, irritated? How do you feel throughout the day? Are you cranky, angry, resentful? Does that correlate with how your skin feels too? Just observe if there is any connection.

We are like perpetual science projects. There are band aids for sensitized skin, but there are also deeper solutions if we are willing to pay closer attention to what makes everything tick. Everything is connected and you may be surprised at what you discover just by paying attention.
