Happy Valentine's Day

Ahhh Valentine’s Day. A day filled with love and happiness… and pressure and stress. And if you don’t have a special someone (or just dislike the commercialization of an emotion) it can be filled with irritation. But you know what - it doesn’t have to be that way!

Valentine’s Day is, of course, a wonderful day to make time for your loved ones and show them how much you care - but it’s also an awesome day to make time for yourself. Sure you might have a partner that’s sending you chocolates and flowers, but there’s no love like self-love! Rather than driving yourself crazy worrying whether or not you’ve picked out the right gift or made reservations at the right spot for dinner - focus on yourself.

Women, especially, fall into the trap of putting everyone and everything thing before themselves: taking care of the kids, making sure your partner has all of their emotional needs met, taking care of the house, the pets, the plants, managing the family’s social and activity calendar. And that’s not even getting into making sure you’re staying on top of your game 100% at your job and making sure you’re making time for friends and extended family. It can be exhausting and often times women end up just getting whatever’s left for themselves… and what’s left might mean 10 minutes to eat a piece of stale toast over the sink, or 15 minutes before bed to stare at the ceiling and try to decompress while simultaneously running through your to-do list for the next day. It might make you feel good to take care of your family and friends, but if you aren’t taking care of yourself ultimately everything will suffer - your mental, physical, and emotional well-being as well as your relationships and your work.

And so, I recommend taking some time today - or this weekend (or any day really. Actually, take some time every day!) to do something that’s just for you. Read a few chapters of a book. Soak in a luxurious bath. Binge watch your favorite TV program while drinking a soothing cup of tea (or wine… you know, in case it’s been a particularly rough week).
